The Orakei Basin Walkway is one of Auckland’s most family-friendly tracks, with wide open views of the water, peaceful scenery, and plenty of small creatures to spot along the way. It’s the perfect place to take kids for a relaxed weekend walk.

Orakei Basin Walkway

On our last visit, something magical happened: right beside the boardwalk, a stingray swam slowly along the shore, as if it was “walking with us.” The kids’ eyes lit up, and they followed it with excitement for a long stretch—it felt like a nature fairytale moment!

The full loop around the basin is about 3 km—flat, easy, and perfect for families. With children, it usually takes around an hour at a relaxed pace.

The highlight is definitely the wooden boardwalk over the water. The views are open, the light sparkles across the surface, and the water is so clear you can often see fish passing underneath. It’s a great way for kids to observe nature while enjoying the walk.

🌋 Fun Fact for Kids

Did you know that Orakei Basin is actually a volcanic maar?

A maar is formed when groundwater or seawater meets hot lava, causing a violent steam explosion. The blast creates a crater, and as rocks and ash fall back down, they build up a low ring around the edge. Over time, the crater fills with water—becoming the basin you see today.

Some maars can be up to 8 km wide, but Orakei is a smaller one—just the right size for families to walk around.

Why not share this with your kids while walking? It turns a simple stroll into an adventure of discovery ✨🌏
