On a recent short trip in Northland, we camped in Paihia and then visited Kerikeri, a hidden gem in the Bay of Islands region. This little town turned out to be a treasure trove—rich in history yet full of surprises that both children and parents can enjoy.

Here’s a suggested family route to explore the charm of Kerikeri:

📍 The Parrot Place - Kerikeri

Home to more than 40 species of parrots, macaws, and exotic birds from around the world, this colourful sanctuary is a hit with kids. Some birds can even be hand-fed, and there’s a playground for little ones.

💡 Recommended Experience: Entry is ticketed, but it includes a small bag of feed. Kids can hand-feed the parrots while chatting to them—just watch out for cheeky beaks! It also makes for fantastic photo moments.

👨‍👩‍👧 Best for: Families with children aged 3+, especially little animal lovers.

💡 Tip: Mornings are best as the birds are more active, and some areas are under cover—good even on rainy days.

🧱 The Stone Store & Kemp House

New Zealand’s oldest surviving stone building and the country’s first shop, dating back to the 1830s. Right next door is Kemp House, the oldest wooden house in New Zealand.

💡 Family Activity: Browse the shop for vintage-style souvenirs and step into the exhibition to learn about the early interactions between missionaries and Māori.

🍫 Makana Confections

This artisan chocolate factory is a sweet stop in Kerikeri. Watch chocolatiers at work through the glass window, and don’t miss the free tastings. Their hazelnut toffee crunch and dark chocolate truffles are favourites.

💡 Perfect for: Anyone with a sweet tooth—or those looking for a beautiful gift box to take home.

👗 Kaleo Designs|New Zealand Art to Wear

A boutique fashion brand blending Māori motifs and natural elements into contemporary clothing and accessories.

💡 What to Do: Explore the shop like a mini art exhibition and pick out a “wearable artwork.” Handmade printed fabrics and accessories also make thoughtful gifts.

Whether you’re travelling with kids, friends, or as a couple, Kerikeri offers the perfect balance of fun and culture. If you’re planning a North Island family getaway, make sure to add this treasure town to your list!
