📖 A Touch of HistoryDuder Regional Park is more than just a scenic spot. The land holds Māori heritage dating back centuries.
The Whakakaiwhara Peninsula was once a settlement site of the Ngāi Tai people. At the eastern headland lies the Whakakaiwhara Pā, a defensive pā site first built in the 1300s.
Walking to the end of the headland today, you can still see traces of this historic site. Oral traditions also tell of the Tainui waka (canoe) travelling along the Hauraki Gulf to this place, forming a key part of Ngāi Tai’s cultural identity.

With its open landscapes, simple routes, and rich history, Duder Regional Park is an easy-going weekend escape for families who want fresh air and nature—without an exhausting climb.
