For many mums and dads, choosing an ECE centre (early childhood education centre or preschool) can feel daunting. What if it’s not the right fit? What should you ask? What details matter most? Sometimes it even feels awkward to raise too many questions.

But here’s the truth: when you ask questions out of genuine care for your child, teachers and centre managers are usually happy to answer in detail.

Of course, there’s no single “perfect” answer, and every family has different needs. Still, the following areas can help you understand whether a centre will be a good match for your child 👇

🧭 Key Questions to Ask

1️⃣ What is your teacher-to-child ratio?According to the Ministry of Education, the ratio for under-twos must not exceed 1:5. Many centres aim for even lower ratios, especially for children under three, as more focused attention helps children feel secure.

2️⃣ How many teachers are qualified? The Ministry sets strict requirements around registered teachers. In most centres, the proportion of qualified teachers will be 80%–100%. A centre’s commitment to professional qualifications often reflects its overall teaching philosophy.

3️⃣ What if my child doesn’t speak English yet?Ask how the centre supports children through this transition. Do they have clear strategies, language support, or extra help available? Don’t just accept “it’s fine”—look for concrete answers.

4️⃣ How long has your teaching team worked here?A stable team helps children build long-term trust and relationships. Frequent staff changes may affect children’s sense of safety and their ability to settle in.

5️⃣ What is the qualified teacher ratio in my child’s actual room? Some centres give an overall average, but what really matters is the ratio in your child’s classroom. That’s where their day-to-day experience happens.

👀 Things to Observe When You Visit ECE Centre

  • Teacher interactions: Do teachers kneel down to the child’s level? Do they make eye contact?

  • Toys and resources: Are they complete and in good condition, or are they broken and mismatched?

  • Outdoor supervision: Are all areas visible, or are there “blind spots”?

  • Classroom atmosphere: Does it feel warm, calm, and structured—or noisy and chaotic?

  • Daily plans and menus: Do they look thoughtful and flexible? Do they align with your family’s approach to care and nutrition?

💡 The Most Important Question of All

How do you feel about the centre? Does your child seem tense and resistant, or curious and willing to explore?

Sometimes, after analysing every detail, the final decision comes down to instinct—whether you feel comfortable leaving your child there, and whether they feel at ease staying.

Trust your intuition. That feeling of confidence and calm is often the clearest answer.

👪💬 We hope this helps families currently looking for an ECE centre. And if you’re an experienced parent or teacher, we’d love to hear your insights too!
